We depart Kennedy Meadows South early in the morning, bear canisters busting with 6 1/2 days worth of food. The Sierra is already magical. We cross the Kern river and walk through our first gorgeous meadow. Water is abundant, it’s such a contrast to the desert. With our plans to hit a Whitney weather window we need to put in some big miles the first day. We climb and climb and climb up past 10,000 feet. We see marmots squeaking at us as we pass.

The End of the Desert (finally)

We depart Tehachapi in the afternoon with the aim to get a few miles in before the sun sets. While we’re now in the Sierra section of the FarOut map and have passed the major milestone of the aqueduct, we are definitely not out of the desert. The first 8 miles are through a very windy and dry wind farm. We can’t hear each other talk over the wind. For dinner we packed out a sandwich to split. After we leave the wind farm we pause by the train tracks to eat before crossing Highway 58.
