Structures of the PI3Kα/KRas complex on lipid bilayers reveal the molecular mechanism of PI3Kα activation
Abstract PI3Kα is a potent oncogene that converts PIP2 to PIP3 at the plasma membrane upon activation by receptor tyrosine kinases and Ras GTPases. In the absence of any structures of activated PI3Kα, the molecular details of its activation remain unknown. Here, we present cryo-EM structures of the PI3Kα/KRas complex embedded in lipid nanodiscs, revealing a rich ensemble of PI3Kα states adopted at the membrane surface.

By Brigitte Meyer, Staff Attorney This month, the USDA released the first update to its Plant Hardiness Zone Map in more than a decade, providing a stark, full-color depiction of the progress of climate change. The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map divides the country into thirteen hardiness zones based on the annual extreme minimum winter temperature at each location.
History, nature take root in U.Va. Gardens
The concert of natural and man-made beauty of the University’s Pavilion Gardens have enchanted visitors, students, faculty and staff for the past 70 years. Many, however, are not aware of the behind-the-scenes maintenance, history and surrounding architecture of the gardens since the University’s inception. Architecture Prof. Richard Wilson notes that the gardens appeared first in Thomas Jefferson’s early drawings of what was then known as the Albemarle Academy.
19 months later - where are we now?
After months of decreasing COVID-19 cases coupled with the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in the United States, the end of the pandemic seemed to be drawing near for most. For perspective, the first United States COVID-19 case was reported on Jan. 21 of last year, making this Saturday 19 months since the virus first arrived in the United States from Wuhan, China.
How pandemic fatigue impacts student wellness through a year of the COVID-19 pandemic
The anniversary of the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic was a significant milestone for many, as normal life has been out of sight and mind for most Americans for over a year now. The 13-month toll that the pandemic has taken on the University community has resulted in the phenomenon of pandemic fatigue for many individuals — defined as the general “demotivation to follow recommended protective behaviors” by the World Health Organization.
Virginia implements new strategies for equitable and timely vaccine distribution following initial challenges
COVID-19 vaccination in the state of Virginia has proven to be a logistical and organizational challenge, but officials on the forefront are leading initiatives to streamline the process and construct solutions. The roadblocks have included inefficient online registration, difficulties distributing vaccines to geographically isolated locations, and issues with equitable distribution and inadequate vaccine supply.
University researchers develop a community resource to assist individuals with autism
The Autism Data System for Research Integration, Visualization and Exchange is a networking and educational resource for people with autism and their families seeking to electronically connect with resources and researchers.
Impaired High-Density Lipoprotein Anti-Oxidant Function Predicts Poor Outcome in Critically Ill Patients
Oxidative stress affects clinical outcome in critically ill patients. Although high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles generally possess anti-oxidant capacities, deleterious properties of HDL have been described in acutely ill patients. The impact of anti-oxidant HDL capacities on clinical outcome in critically ill patients is unknown. We therefore analyzed the predictive value of anti-oxidant HDL function on mortality in an unselected cohort of critically ill patients.
