When I think about where "home" is for me, my mind usually wanders to the familiar faces of friends and family who have always been there. But lately, especially since living abroad, my mind also wanders back to Ontario. I think of the changing seasons, the lakeside summers, the wide open space. I also think about all the background details I grew up with, the little habits and sights and sounds that never seemed particularly noteworthy because they were just there.

I grew up in Toronto and have lived in a lot of different parts of the city over the years. St. Clair West, Parkdale, Riverdale, Cabbagetown, Leslieville… let's just say it's been a jam-packed couple of decades of moving around, exploring and figuring out what I do and don't like. As someone who grew up in Ontario, there were definitely parts of everyday life I considered "normal" until I started travelling. I mean, it's easy to think that the things you're used to are universal until you've experienced anything else, especially when you're young. But even now that I'm older, it's funny to see how leaving a place suddenly makes all of those things that were once monotonous stand out.
