Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I don't remember the assignment, but recall it came unexpectedly from Prevention the day after my dog died. It brought joy amidst grief.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes

How is social media changing news?

It's a free for all. Wild opinions are posed as facts. Who's the Boss?

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bonnie Garmus

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means a hunger to share honest, broad and deep, well-researched, insightful, necessary, helpful, timely, true information.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Hashtags are dead.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Please pitch fitness-wellness related stories to BB@BrookBenten.com.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

an iPhone, GoPro, mixer, microphone, umbrella lights, InShot, Royalty Free Fitness Music

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram

Who do you wish followed you?

Anyone with a nudge to quit alcohol, nourish mind + body, move, manage stress, sleep, build strong social connections- to settle for more!

Why did you become a journalist?

I was cold called by Prevention 14 years ago to create workouts for the magazine. It led to writing opportunities. I lead a way to well-being

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I attended a small high school. We didn't have a school newspaper.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

That's an easy one. "Sweat with Brook Benten." It's my memoir-meets-wellness motivation.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Don't write to help people. It weighs on them. Write because you like it. They'll be drawn to your gift. Then they'll help themselves.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I got a pitch from J/PR when Larry Ellison and Dr. David Agus opened Sensei Lana'i, offering to host me (+1). I had read Dr. Agus's books.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Most pitches aren't bad. (Pro-publicists!) I once got invited to a FAM trip of pub crawls. As a staunch sobriety advocate, 100% not for me.

What's your favorite drink?

Topo Chico

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Outside on a trail

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I am not an object to peddle products. I model wellness. I show what's possible with healthy choices. Say it louder for the men in the back.
