Abstract Pollinators are important drivers of floral divergence and speciation in plants. Here we investigate the effects of floral trait variation and trait matching on pollen receipt in two different plant species, Tritoniopsis revoluta (Iridaceae) and Nerine humilis (Amaryllidaceae) each visited by long-proboscid nemestrinid flies and solitary bees across their ranges.

If you were a flowering plant, wouldn't you want your pollen to be received by a plant of your own kind? According to a new study, at least one plant may ensure that happens, by blasting "rival" pollen off of pollinating animals' bodies. Fictional species such as triffids aside, plants can't physically move from place to place in order to mate with one another.

Pollen that is discretely rubbed or stamped from successive flowers onto a pollinator may form a three-dimensional landscape like a “pollen layer cake” (Armbruster et al., 2009; Minnaar et al., 2019a). The structures of these landscapes can theoretically affect the distance and timing of a flower's pollen dispersal (Harder and Wilson, 1998), with potentially far-reaching effects on floral evolution and ecology.
