Charles Derousselle, who once dazzled fans with his fleet feet in Breaux Bridge, still holds the Class 3A 800-meter record in the LHSAA State Meet. Much has changed, but his 1:52.50 clocking in 1981 has stood the test of time for 42 years. "I go every year," said Derousselle, a businessman in Baton Rouge.

Jerry Simmons — Hall of Fame tennis coach at UL and LSU — dies after long illness
When Jerry Simmons arrived in Lafayette as the college tennis coach at then-USL, he found a sleepy program that wasn't much above intramural status. So Simmons went to work, bringing in talented players like Carter Lomax, Skipper Hunt, Umberto Izquierdo and Harry Barton. The next wave included Bill Bryan, Steve Hernandez and Gustavo Orellana. Paul Griffith, Gary Bowles and eventually Tarek el Sakka, who had played Davis Cup for his native Egypt at age 14, all made their way to Lafayette.

Toward the end of last year, Israel signed an historic agreement with Lebanon, enabling both countries to enjoy an abundance of natural gas located deep below their respective territorial waters. Now, Israel can continue exploring its northern Karish gas field without the risk of Hezbollah missiles overhead. And Israel will receive indirect royalties from Lebanon’s Kana field – with no peace treaty (yet), royalties will be paid via a third country.

Teurlings' Pilar Burson named All-Metro Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year
At a school like Teurlings Catholic, there are numerous ways to find athletic enjoyment and success. It took a while, but the Rebels have reached that stage in cross country. The Rebels of coach Pilar Burson have grown to be a statewide LHSAA contender, one that repeated as state champions in this year's soggy state meet at Northwestern State in November.
Teurlings Rebels set to defend state cross country title
The event is the same, although the groups may be a bit different. Teurlings Catholic won the LHSAA state cross country title in Class 4A a year ago, and will take aim at another crown on Monday at Northwestern State in Natchitoches. Reclassification has morphed the event into five divisions, but either way a title is on the line. "If we're healthy, we've got as good chance at anybody," said coach Pilar Burson, who tested her squad with challenging matches to keep their competitive edge.
Teurlings Catholic repeats as state cross country champions
It was cold and breezy on Monday in Natchitoches, with showers around the corner. But the Teurlings Catholic Rebels remained on target and brought home the Division II LHSAA State Cross Country title at Northwestern State. It was the second crown in a row and third in four years for the Rebels. "We were totally ready to go," said coach Pilar Burson. "We had to figure out if we were physically ready. In the last 10 days, we've had to work our workouts to deal with kids having the flu. "But we did it.

Catholic High products Hill-Green, LeBlanc primed to reach even greater heights this fall
Zi'yon Hill-Green and Peter LeBlanc took different approaches to the summer, but both Catholic High of New Iberia products are primed to contribute to the 2022 Ragin' Cajun football season. "I took a trip," Hill-Green said on the eve of Cajuns practice last week. "Some friends of mine and I went to visit Arizona. There were 11 of us in all. Veteran safety Bralen Trahan relishes chance to put finishing touch on storied Cajuns' career
Bralen Trahan has no problem picking out his favorite moment as a UL defensive back, "The UAB game on the road in 2021," said Trahan, a former Acadiana High School All-Stater. "We were leading late in the game, and they were running a two-minute drill, and I had the game-winning interception." The Cajuns held on from there for a crucial 24-20 victory on the way to another winning season and bowl game, and Trahan has been a key part of that success.

Yves Cherubin was UL's bright spot on final day of Sun Belt meet
Yves Cherubin had reason to smile. A few minutes earlier, he had uncoiled his lanky frame and won the 110-meter hurdles at the Sun Belt Conference outdoor track and field championships at Cajun Track. His time of 13.71 was enough to surpass those who had a jump at the beginning. "I'm kind of tall," Cherubin said. "It takes me a while to unwind and get going, but when I hit my top speed, I can make that up.
UL's Chandler Mixon secures silver showing in Sun Belt decathlon

UL's Marin Barras settles for second on day one of Sun Belt meet
Marin Barras was not entirely pleased. She had every reason to be satisfied with her Sun Belt Conference debut on the first day of the Sun Belt Track and Field Championships at Cajun Track - every reason but one. She didn't win, and that, after all, is the reason for competing. So, for one day, she had to settle for a 153-foot throw and second place in the women's javelin. "I was aiming for my personal best," said Barras, who turned in a 158-8 throw in recent regular season action.
