Get on the water by bike at one of these pedal-to-paddle destinations
Have river (and bike and inflatable kayak), will paddle. (Photos: Jonathan Maus/BikePortland) We’re lucky here in Portland to be surrounded by rivers and lakes. We also happen to have some pretty great bikeways. Put them together and you’ve got lots of fun possibilities. After years of thinking about it, I finally did a pedal-to-paddle! Last weekend I loaded up our inflatable kayak into the trailer and Juli (Mrs. BikePortland) and I pedaled about nine miles south to Sellwood Riverfront Park.
Keep these things in mind when you get on your bike

Beavers are redefining the landscape at Smith and Bybee Lake Wetlands Natural Area
A new beaver dam on the channel that connects Smith and Bybee lakes. (KATU) That's what Metro scientists are doing to restore wetlands and the channel that connects Smith and Bybee Lake Wetlands Natural Area in North Portland. The beavers do most of the work, with an assist from Metro regional parks. It turns out beaver and nutria -- the former is native, the latter invasive -- work together building dams. And that's a problem along the channel that connects Smith and Bybee lakes.
Paddling Beyond Portland
Story by Brooke Jackson // Photos by Brooke Jackson and Nicole Wasko A defining geographical feature of Oregon is the Willamette River, which divides East and West Portland. Historically, the Willamette has shaped the history and development of Portland from the natural resources of Ross Island to forming a coastal sea port. For myself, a local kayak guide, the Willamette offers a great learning environment for new paddlers.
Wetlands wonder - Sunset
On this spring afternoon, pelting rain had scared away most of those signed up for a guided paddle trip on north Portland’s Smith and Bybee Lakes Wildlife Area. But by the time our flotilla of two kayaks and one canoe put in, the rain had quit, and the low-angled sun lent a golden sheen to Bybee Lake’s unruffled surface. The western painted turtles were hiding from the cold, but violet-green and cliff swallows and great blue herons filled the sky.
