BYU's defense is the antidote for anxiety at QB Original
Anxiety thrives in uncertainty and with just weeks left to prepare a new quarterback for opening night, there is plenty of both at BYU. Fortunately for the three candidates - McCae Hillstead, Treyson Bourguet and Bear Bachmeier - they have an antidote that can calm the mind, slow the pulse and reduce the pressure - and it has nothing to do with them. For the time being, BYU's defense is the new offense.

BYU's defense has struggled to contain running quarterbacks, which could be a problem when Kansas State's Avery Johnson visits Saturday Original
The sample size is small, but BYU's defense in coordinator Jay Hill's second season has been fantastic, for the most part. The Cougars (3-0) are No. 13 in the country in total defense, allowing just 236.3 yards per game, and No. 4 nationally in pass efficiency defense with a rating of 76.27. They posted a 74.3 rating - that's quite good - in Saturday night's 34-14 win at Wyoming.
Kansas battles injuries but favored against BYU in critical Big 12 clash
Kansas, despite battling injuries, is favored at home for the Big 12 matchup against BYU. With key player Kevin McCullar Jr. out due to a leg injury, the Jayhawks will rely on their depth to continue their winning streak. Jaxson Robinson of BYU is expected to bounce back from a poor shooting game, while Kansas' Hunter Dickinson is set to exploit BYU's defensive vulnerabilities. Although BYU has shown offensive strength, their weak defense on the road could give Kansas the advantage.
Seven Takeaways From BYU's 38-27 Loss to Kansas
Losing is never fun. It's a lot less fun when, in the words of BYU Quarterback Kedon Slovis, it feels like you left a win on the field. To say BYU's performance closely resembled the Wasatch Mountain skyline feels like an understatement. BYU scored 27 points on 10 drives after only punting once. Say what you will about BYU's offense, the game certainly wasn't boring when they were on the field. No one at BYU is happy with the outcome, there still is much to learn.

The never-ending question about whether BYU's football program is ready physically and from a talent standpoint to join the Big 12 continues, although it took a serious hit in Week 7 of the college football season. Meanwhile, the Cougars' performance Saturday afternoon against a Southeastern Conference middleweight provided one answer loud and clear from the LaVell Edwards Stadium rooftops: BYU clearly couldn't compete in the SEC. Not even close. Any suggestion that it could is pure hogwash.

Letter: Breaking rivalry contract
I am once again troubled by the arrogance exhibited by the University of Utah administration. The flagrant foul by a player in a basketball game is unacceptable, but is part of the game. NCAA rules are in place to deal with these behaviors and are more than adequate to rectify behaviors. High mindedness and heavy handidness by the University of Utah in punishing players, the athletic programs and Utah community are not acceptable behaviors from a university.

In our opinion: Why Religious Freedom Day is essential
For the last 23 years, Jan. 16 has been set aside by presidential proclamation as “Religious Freedom Day,” intended to encourage recognition of our nation’s tradition of protecting the right to worship and act according to one's creed and conscience. This year, such recognition is as poignant, and necessary, as it has been at any time in our recent history.

In our opinion: Drop contentious battle
Utah’s Republican Party leaders have been clear from the start about their opposition to a new law requiring them to grant access to primary election ballots through a signature-gathering process. But party chairman James Evans’ dogged determination to keep fighting the law is on the verge of hurting the party and the entire electoral process in the state as the 2016 elections approach. It’s time for Evans to drop this contentious battle.

In our opinion: A new health care service improves access to care and cuts costs at the same time
Health care accounts for 17.4 percent of the American economy as a whole, and rising costs continue to put pressure on both the public and private sector. Government expenditures on Medicare and Medicaid, as well as subsidies provided under the Affordable Care Act, are putting a massive strain on the federal budget. Reform efforts in health care have largely focused on increasing coverage rather than reducing costs, which continue to rise at a rate higher than inflation.
