Child custody cases in Santa Clara County complicated by coronavirus
The Family Justice Center Courthouse at 201 N. First Street in downtown San Jose is pictured in this file photo. Sheltering in place hasn’t been easy on anyone. But for those who share custody of their children, the problem is exacerbated. Social distancing has made banal tasks like grocery shopping more arduous.

Gene Roddenberry’s near-death experiences in the Pacific War
2nd Lt. Eugene Wesley Roddenberry was just 21 years old when he reported for duty in September 1942 as a copilot with the 394th Bombardment Squadron at Bellows Field on Oahu. Since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the 394th had been patrolling the ocean around Hawaii and training crews. Now it was preparing to go into action in the South Pacific under its new commander, West Pointer and Midway veteran Maj. Orin H. Rigley. Gene Roddenberry was assigned to the crew of Lt. William Ripley.
Natural bedfellows
An interesting thing has happened to our cousins in the north – the prospect of Britain leaving the EU has moved from the unthinkable to the thinkable. The British policy-making elite has long considered the topic as beyond polite conversation, but the complacency of yesteryear has been replaced by bafflement, fear and full-blown panic at the realisation that le grand projet may be crumbling underfoot. Support for Ukip has surged since David Cameron promised an in/out referendum by 2018.

Bill Shorten is too keen to dabble with the constitution
Most policymakers approach the issue of constitutional change with a high degree of caution. Bill Shorten is different. Even with the handicap of minuscule advisory resources in federal opposition, the Labor leader has been unusually bold in advocating and entertaining significant constitutional change. The first area of constitutional change advocated by the Opposition Leader is for an Indigenous "Voice to Parliament", to be decided by referendum in the first term of a Labor government.

US attorney general Jeff Sessions issues order to speed up immigrant deportations
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday sought to speed up the deportation of illegal immigrants, telling immigration judges they should only postpone cases in removal proceedings “for good cause shown.” Sessions, in an interim order that was criticized by some lawyers, said the “good-cause” standard “limits the discretion of immigration judges and prohibits them from granting continuances for any reason or no reason at all.” Unlike the federal judiciary system, U.S. immigration...
Five communications lessons from England manager Gareth Southgate
There’s always been huge expectation about the England football team. The fact that England created the rules for the modern game has always put huge pressure on the national team manager and his players.Tournament after tournament, the England team have disappointed or fallen short, most often after the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.Ahead of the World Cup in Russia this summer, it’s fair to say that the level of expectation was not as high as for previous squads, although England’s early...
"The World Cup is thrilling: but FIFA must change" - Bonita Mersiades
I’ve loved football since I was knee high to a grasshopper. The fact that my country, Australia, competed at the World Cup for the fourth consecutive time, fifth in total, is simply wonderful. But one of the things I’ve had to learn to do in football is divorce my love of the game from the way the game is run. If you don’t, everything we know about football, and the way those who are the custodians of the game have behaved, is enough to put you off it for life.

While San Francisco Wipes Out Thousands of Pot Convictions, Santa Clara County is Slow to Act

We must recall lessons of Japanese internment, lest we repeat tragedy - The Portland Press Herald
“Remember Pearl Harbor when you sight down the barrel of your gun …” “Remember Pearl Harbor, wipe the Jap from the map …” “We’ll blow every one of them right off of the face of the Earth …” GORHAM — Those are lyrics from a popular song released after that infamous attack 75 years ago this month. Designed to motivate our troops to fight, it was recorded by Carson Robison, played over the airwaves and on jukeboxes and sung by us all. That included me, who turned 8 on Dec. 10 that year.

Huge quake exposes problems in how New Zealand prepares
FILE - This Monday, Nov. 14, 2016 aerial file photo shows cracks in farmland around Conway near Kaikoura after a powerful earthquake hit New Zealand. The huge earthquake that hit New Zealand this past week, buckling roads, uplifting sections of coastline and killing two people, also exposed problems in how the country monitors its earthquake risk and prepares for tsunamis. And it raised questions about whether the city of Wellington put people at risk by reopening buildings too soon.

Inequality & American Democracy: Societal Fractures Worsened by Wealth Gap | National Review
Public disenchantment with democracy as a system of government has grown consistently in recent decades, with Gallup surveys showing a large decline of confidence in democratic institutions. The number of Americans having confidence in citizens to make good judgments “under our democratic system” is at a historic low of 56 percent. An alarming 40 percent of the population has “lost faith” in U.S. democracy, according to a poll published in the Washington Post last year.
A definition of cascading disasters and cascading effects: Going beyond the “toppling dominos†metaphor
Constructing definitions and glossaries is a challenge for all organizations and institutions involved in major projects. In defining terms they may establish criteria for financing a project, determine the focus required by funders, or address the domain of policies, practice and research. In other words, the precision and aptness of definitions and glossaries can determine the success or failure of initiatives and investments.
'This debate is not about freedom of speech, it's about respect' - Star Observer
MANY people were offended by the Bill Leak carton in The Australian on September 21. That cartoon needs to be put in its correct historical context. The tactics of a few fringe radicals on both sides of this debate is setting a toxic tone for a debate that should be about bringing people together. As decent people we need to call this out, we need a sense of perspective and respect. The weight of history is huge on all of us, but it’s what we learn from history that matters most.
