Not so long ago, adventure pal Wynne and I met Sally Sondesky, of the Bensalem Historical Society, at the famous Growden Mansion in the township to discuss how Ben Franklin was a frequent visitor before the American Revolution. Bensalem's preserved Growden Mansion on Neshaminy Valley Drive counted Benjamin Franklin among its frequent guests. Henry Wynkoop and the struggle for a new nation

Richboro’s Henry Wynkoop was a hunted man in the summer of 1776. Redcoats occupying New York wanted the 39-year-old Bucks County farmer to be arrested and hung. Orders went out to a detachment of Hessian mercenary troops in Newark, N.J., to nab him in a shock-and-awe raid on Wynkoop’s farm 56 miles to the south. Bucks County Judge Henry Wynkoop. Under cover of night in late August, the horse soldiers crossed the Delaware River and lit out for Wynkoop’s stone mansion overlooking his 450-acre farm.

Bucks County place names offer many mysteries for me to solve. One seemed easy to decipher: Pipersville. I knew Scottish immigrants helped settle Bucks County. Naturally, I concluded the crossroads hamlet where Route 611 and Route 413 meet in Upper Bucks must be where a Bagpipe Parade is held every fall. To double-check whether my bagger theory held water, I drove to Pipersville in Bedminster Township. I’ve learned over the years I can be wrong.
