1 Introduction Cellular senescence is a state of irreversible cell cycle arrest, first characterized by Hayflick and Moorhead (1961). Since that time, there has been extensive research to characterize mechanisms of senescence induction, the role of senescence in tissue remodeling, its anti-tumorigenesis function, its contribution to age-related diseases, and biomarkers to more specifically define senescent cells (Dodig et al. 2019; Hernandez-Segura et al. 2018; Munoz-Espin and Serrano 2014).
