As I watch the Austin school district scramble to make up a portion of its $19.7 million deficit with the proposed closure of 10 (down from 13) schools, I can’t help but think we are looking in the wrong direction. Much stands to be lost: small schools that have been in communities for generations, campus-wide dual language programs so popular the schools are over-enrolled, plus programs like Montessori that have served communities well. And that’s only this year.
