FSU researchers create supernova simulation
For over 400 years, nobody has been able to witness a supernova as it occurs in the sky. Using technology, scientists at FSU have allowed students to have a more up-close experience by creating a simulation which demonstrates how a supernova explodes. Focusing on white dwarf stars, the simulation works with Type 1a supernovae using computational analysis and research investigating the conditions that lead to its explosion. The study was published in the Royal Astronomical Society’s Monthly Notices.

FSU Researchers experiment with candidate material for quantum computers
A team of physicists from Florida State University’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory have developed a new technique for understanding the magnetism of quantum spin liquids. Using this technique, researchers have been analyzing ruthenium trichloride, a compound theorized to be compatible with quantum computing.
FSU researchers analyze the effectiveness of suicide interventions
Florida State University researchers, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Denver and Columbia University, conducted a meta-analysis of nearly 600 studies regarding treatments and interventions for suicidal and non-suicidal SITBs, or self-injurious thoughts and behaviors. The aim of this research was to analyze the effectiveness of treatment interventions among studies that include randomized control trials (RTCs), post-treatment outcome reports and interventions.

On Nov. 16, Florida State University hosted The Fallen Heroes Ceremony to commemorate the 6,972 veteran lives lost since the war on terrorism began. The war on terrorism describes the American-led global counterterrorism campaign launched in response to the terrorist attacks committed on Sept. 11, 2001. This campaign initiated a new wave for the United States’s future engagement in global relations. Nearly 7,000 flags spread over the Mina Jo Powell Alumni Green.
FSU-led team receives grant to study the effects of climate change on sea urchins
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has issued a $1.1 million grant to Florida State University researchers to explore the effects of warming on purple sea urchin reproduction and larval distribution patterns. Presidential search advisory committee approved to find new successor for Pres. Thrasher
On Oct. 2 the FSU Board of Trustees held a meeting and approved all 15 members of the presidential search committee which will be responsible for the search to find a qualified successor to Florida State University president, John Thrasher. President John Thrasher announces retirement; Board begins search process for successor
On Friday, September 11 Florida State University President John Thrasher announced plans to retire after the fall semester ends. What quarantine looks like for students inside FSU’s COVID-19 dorms
For on-campus students coming down with COVID-19 this fall, quarantine has become mandatory. After testing positive, University Health Services decides whether or not to place students quarantine. If so, students are required to move into Rogers Hall or Salley Hall in the southwest corner of Florida State University's campus for roughly 14 days from the time they test positive.
COVID-19 complicates judicial bypass process for minors seeking abortion
A controversial new bill was recently passed in Florida’s House of Representatives, and members of Planned Parenthood worry it could infringe on the privacy of minors seeking abortion. House Bill 265, proposed by Rep. Erin Grall, R-Vero Beach, prohibits physicians from performing an abortion on a minor until they obtain written consent from their legal guardian.
