Sterilisation by force or coercion will be specifically outlawed in Canada’s Criminal Code. The law, passed in the House of Commons last week, follows reports of healthcare professionals sterilising people without their free and informed consent as recently as 2024. Indigenous women make up most of the estimated 12 000-15 000 people affected, said Harmony Redsky, executive director of the charity Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice.

If ongoing phase 3 trials succeed, gene editing will offer a novel therapy for transthyretin amyloidosis, and treatments for hyperlipidemia may not be far behind. Precise gene editing using clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-associated protein 9 (Cas9) was discovered in 2012.
