I went on my fifth police ride-along this week. The first one was before I was elected, slightly on a whim. I put in for both the city police and the university police. The university emailed me back faster. That day we patrolled the university land, much more expansive than I knew, even having worked there for years. The patrol officer mainly scared off kids who might be climbing abandoned radio towers in the desert.

The hardest part of grief for me has been losing memories of the person you've lost, like their voice or a clear picture of their face. But from my Oma, there are other strange tidbits I do remember. Like a spot on her neck where she had a scar that looks like a mole removed. I'd argue that I'm not a hoarder. My husband would like to contest that. I explained to him that a middle-class life is not complete without a drawer of odds and ends in the kitchen. He said that one drawer sounds plausible, "but," he said, and started to point at more than one drawer around the kitchen that could fit the bill. However, my laughter was nearly villainous when I pulled out a saved-and-stashed scoop because a new protein shake jug didn't come with one.
