Dog control and parking wardens face more aggression on the job

Parking and dog control staff are facing increasing aggression, a council manager says. At a Tasman District Council committee meeting on Thursday, regulatory manager Shane Bruyns said the abuse of staff was previously under-reported. People were starting to become more aggressive towards compliance staff, especially parking and dog control staff, he said. Although body cameras helped to a degree, they also highlighted that staff were working in a changing environment.

‘Disrespectful and immature' Govt rule delays speed limit drops

A Government rule that forces the Tasman District Council to reconsult over long awaited speed limit drops has been lambasted as “disingenuous”, “disheartening” and “frustrating” by councillors. Under the new Setting of Speed Limits Rule that came into force at the end of October, Tasman’s speed limit changes now have to be treated as new and have to be consulted on again. A lengthy “cost benefit disclosure statement” for each road is also to be submitted.

Safety concerns as path next to highway delayed

Nathan Silcock has been waiting for years for a safe path for his kids to bike to school. Now, one of his two sons will miss out, after a shortfall in funding has pushed back the construction of a pathway alongside the narrow, high speed road from Upper Moutere village to the Moutere Hills Community Centre 1.5km away. Silcock has two children, Ethan, 12, and Tommy, 9.
