Mac DeMarco – Ulster Hall – Live Review – 31/08/26 by Cathy Brown Mac DeMarco, Ulster Hall, Belfast, 31 August 2026 Mac DeMarco has spent much of his career cultivating a reputation as rock’s lovable agent of chaos. On stage, anything can happen — and usually does. But at the Ulster Hall last night, DeMarco seemed determined to rein it in.
Say She She - Cut & Rewind - Album Review
Say She She – Cut & Rewind – Album Review by Cathy Brown Say She She’s Cut & Rewind is a record that brims with urgency, written – according to the band – in the brief spaces between relentless touring and studio sessions. That tension gives the album its pulse: the opening title track sets the tone with a confident sweep of harmonies and a groove that immediately pulls the listener into their signature “discodelic” world.
The Pillowman - Lyric Theatre - Review
Header The Pillowman – Lyric Theatre – Review by Cathy Brown The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh A Lyric Theatre and Prime Cut Co-Production Until June 15th, 2024 Following on from their impressive production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane last year, Prime Cut and the Lyric, Belfast have teamed up again to present another play by Martin McDonagh. Even those familiar with McDonagh’s offhand way with murder and his penchant for dark humour may need to brace themselves for the shock of The Pillowman.
Opinion: Dear Israel: I’m Stuck in the Middle With You
My parents taught me that the existence of Israel is essential. My children taught me that support for their violently racist policies is fascistic. There’s a middle position, even if it sometimes feels contradictory. We call it tzedakah. In churches, it’s tithing, or passing the basket. In synagogue, the Hebrew word tzedakah means not charity, but justice. Sarah Hurwitz, former speechwriter for Barack and Michelle Obama, discussed this essential distinction.

In the US, I used to cancel dental checkups so I could afford to fix my car. Now as a mom in Argentina, healthcare is much cheaper and more reliable Original

Is play the new work?
While play and work may appear contradictory, they actually have many synergies, and playfulness is growing in prominence within today's progressive workplaces. Embracing play to realise benefits for employees and employers is not new. We've known the benefits of play from child development, where play has been shown to expand physical and mental ability. We know that humour, playfulness, laughter, and joy are essential to using our brains entirely.
CentrePeace nonprofit continues to grow and thrive near Bellefonte | Centre Daily Times
CentrePeace was established in 1995. Centre Daily Times, file If you haven’t noticed, Route 150 between State College and Bellefonte has become quite the “thrifter’s row.” While CentrePeace has been in the same approximate location for years, both nonprofit and for-profit resale shops have sprouted. Everyone loves the thrill of the hunt and a great find. I believe thrifter’s row started with CentrePeace. CentrePeace was established in 1995 by Marie Hamilton.

The HR implications of living in an age of longevity
The idea of the ‘100-year life’ was coined by Professors Gratton and Scott of London Business School in their 2016 book of the same name. Five years on, the message is no less stark. Notwithstanding the devastating effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly on older members of society, the ONS predicts that by 2050, 25 per cent of the population will be over 65, an age group that is growing faster than any other.

A Climate Action for Every Type of Activist

Report after report about a bleak climate future can leave people in despair. But another option is good for you and the planet.

Paul Smith’s VIC plans new and improved trails to attract skiers
Skiers at the Paul Smith’s College VIC this winter. Photo by Mike Lynch By Cathy Brown Tom Romeo drove an hour from Massena on a snowy Sunday to cross-country ski at the Paul Smith’s College Visitor Interpretive Center. An avid outdoorsman, he had spent the previous day breaking his own trail elsewhere. That, he said, “was quite a slog.” So it was a pleasant change to glide along a quiet groomed path in the woods, and to picnic at a VIC lean-to. “It’s a nice little trail system,” he said.
Is Something Lost When We Use Mindfulness as a Productivity Tool?
I came to mindfulness as a healing practice after overcoming an addiction to Adderall during my junior year of college. I found myself in this situation because I thought that using Adderall to help me focus was no big deal — an attitude shared by 81% of students nationwide. Adderall simply seemed like an innocuous shortcut to getting things done – and to do so efficiently yet effortlessly.
7 Myths About Coming Out at Work
More and more big businesses are providing workplace protections for LGBTIQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer) people. It’s becoming clear that when workers can bring their authentic selves to work, they are more productive and engaged. Research shows that coming out increases job satisfaction, intention to stay, and emotional support from co-workers, whereas staying “in the closet” has costs — both for the individual and the company.

Why I encourage my kids to hitchhike
They grew up mostly in the US. When we left the States for Argentina, they still had the lingering attitude of, “They want what they want, and they want it NOW.” Orderly, predictable, comfortable, structured. I feel it’s my job as their mom to break them of that level of expectation of the world. I think there are incredible benefits to learning to go with the flow and let go of rigid structure. We could get picked up in two minutes, or two hours.
How travel has made me a better mom
Miserable, frustrated, unfulfilled moms are definitely not the best role models for their kiddos. Since my own childhood, I have been drawn almost magnetically to travel, yet I grew up in a family where travel was seen as a luxury for the privileged, and certainly not as a responsible option for a full-time lifestyle.
13 honest questions this American has for you, Argentina
My hair is dark blonde. My Lithuanian-Scottish descent skin is, at most times of the year, white as a ghost. I am a US-size 8 and in good shape. Yet Argentines, you insist on calling me ‘negra’ (black girl) and ‘gordita’ (little fatty) more times a day than I can count. You tell me not to look so much into it, that they are really terms of endearment, but, please, if it makes no difference to you, can’t we just go with the also popular ‘reina’ (queen), ‘linda’ (pretty), or ‘hermosa’ (beautiful)?
11 things to do in Buenos Aires after midnight (besides partying)
Not through Villa 31, please, unless you have some sort of Fight Club wish to get your gringo ass beaten and/or robbed. Instead, head over to the Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur (Ecological Reserve). This 865-acre park is a quiet and pretty safe place to stroll, bike, or enjoy a bottle of Malbec while taking in the skyline.
13 things Argentines say vs. what they really mean
What they say: “I’ll get there around 9pm.” What they mean: “I’ll get there probably before midnight, but not a chance in hell before 10pm. Whatever. I’ll show up eventually. Maybe.” What they say: “We should go to Punta for New Year’s…” What they mean: “We should go to Punta (del Este) for New Year’s…but we both know that it won’t actually happen as the peso is dive-bombing and on what we make, we couldn’t even afford to split a bottled water there in high season.
Best Boutique Hotels in Buenos Aires
If you are coming to a place as vibrant as Buenos Aires, why on earth would you choose to spend your time in a lifeless hotel chain that makes you feel as though you could be in any hotel in any other city in the world? Buenos Aires has a seemingly endless list of boutique hotel options that make you feel like you are more at home. Here is the low-down on some favorites to check out, grouped by area of town: Mine is a hotel that exudes warmth and hominess.
Still a Hot Market, Even with Sky-high Prices
Uruguay’s Punta del Este: Still a Hot Market, Even with Sky-high Prices On the beach coast of Uruguay, branching out from famed Punta del Este, is a booming real estate market that shows no sign of letting up. If you’re rich or famous, this is the spot to see and be seen in South America. For those who have never been, it’s next to impossible to try to explain the intangibles of what makes Punta del Este, Uruguay so special.
A Father's Day open letter
To my Dad, with immense gratitude for how you support my travels. When I was little, I didn’t know what I wanted to be or do when I grew up, but I knew I wouldn’t, couldn’t be like you. You, with your 70-hour workweeks driving trucks, reporting to a boss you couldn’t stand. Your doing Every. Single. Thing with “elbow grease,” when all I wanted to do was slide by and find the easy, fun way out of a project. Your chosen lifestyle seemed like hell, and I didn’t understand you.
17 sure signs you're a tourist in Buenos Aires
You don’t even know what you don’t know. From curing the mate (that’s the cup, not the yerba — are you lost already?), to filling it, to the water temperature (must.be.perfect.), to the rotation, the timing…and I bet you had the great idea to say gracias when someone handed it to you, to show your appreciation. Gracias means you’re bailing and you don’t want any — so don’t wonder why they don’t include you after.
Each member of this First Nations people just declined $267,000 for permission to build an oil pipeline through their land
The Lax Kw’alaams Band, a Canadian First Nations people living in a remote part of British Columbia, just declined an offer of $267,000 per person in their 3,600 member band (for a total of $960 million) to allow a natural gas pipeline and processing facility to be built on their lands by Malaysian energy giant Petronas and its partners. Petronas is looking to proceed with its $30-billion-dollar Pacific NorthWest LNG terminal and Prince Rupert gas pipeline.
Never let yourself be a victim
I was 12 years into my relationship when I realized it was a sham. I should have remembered that every fairy tale has at least one dark character to keep the storyline strong — it’s just usually not the prince. I had married my teenage sweetheart, the guy who taught me to dream huge and never take no for an answer.

Luciana and Miguel
A FEW YEARS BACK my house lease was up, not to be renewed, and I found myself desperately needing a place to hang my hat. When I was offered the chance to inhabit an abandoned house on a large plot of beautiful land at the foothills of the Andes in Argentina, I was naïve enough to think I was moving into a place where the only difference was that I would be invited to some killer authentic asados by my very gaucho neighbor who owned the place.
You don't know how to travel with kids, do you?
WHEN IT COMES to travel with kids, by popular account I do everything wrong. I’ve been called irresponsible, crazy, foolish, naïve. Yet I happen to have for kids three of the most resilient, relaxed, and curious travelers I know, so I say screw all the naysayers because I must be doing something right. The following are some ‘common sense’ approaches to traveling with kids — but while they may be common, the sense part is definitely up for debate.
How to parent like an Argentine
Basically, the day she turns 15 she expects an over-the-top wedding, minus the groom. And, because she has been coddled and treated like a princess since the day she was born, she will get it. Start with buying her a formal ball gown (the more sparkles and ruffles the better, and bonus points if it comes in a headache-inducing, near-neon color). Set up a professional photoshoot to nail the shot of her that will go on the hundreds of glossy invites.
The Vines of Mendoza
I’m not someone who likes to overthink my wine. Please don’t talk to me for hours about notes of blackberry and about how I should smell that Merlot more profoundly and how I should scrutinize the exact color of my Cab Franc for what seems like ages before I can even put it in my mouth. I don’t want a cold and calculated scientific experience, I want poetry. I want the laughter that accompanies a bottle of wine that is enjoyed with good company.
13 memories you have if you grew up in Michigan
Whether you crossed from Detroit to Windsor or through Sault St. Marie up north, your 19-year-old self couldn’t believe how easy it could be to just walk into a party store and come out with beer. Then you learned. Oh, the frustration when you tried to explain to your Detroit born-and-raised dad how most of the parts in his Ford were actually made overseas and he just wouldn’t listen to logic. You had to hear about ‘Built Ford Tough’ and all that jazz until he was practically blue in the face.
