In Parkinson’s disease, nigrostriatal midbrain dopaminergic neurons degenerate and cause typical Parkinson’s disease motor-related impairments, while the dysfunction of mesocorticolimbic midbrain dopaminergic neurons is implicated in addiction and neuropsychiatric disorders.
