Hymie Rubenstein is a retired Professor of Anthropology at the University of Manitoba, where he taught and conducted research between 1973 and 2004. He was born in Toronto and is a triple-degree holder from the University of Toronto (B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.). His doctoral research took him to the small Eastern Caribbean country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where he has conducted ethnographic fieldwork ever since. According to Benjamin Lawton, BC Premier David Eby is surrendering the province’s control to external threats, particularly regarding the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (DRIPA) and indigenous co-governance. He contrasts Eby’s perceived weakness with the new BC Conservative leader, Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who is portrayed as strong and unwilling to be bullied. Lawton also argues that Eby’s policies undermine property rights and provincial sovereignty.

Assembly of First Nations calls for criminalization of residential school denialism

On the first day of its annual general meeting, July 14-16, the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) passed an emergency resolution calling for Canada to criminalize residential school denialism. The resolution, passed during the AFN’s annual general assembly in Ottawa, urges the government to amend the Combating Hate Act or create new legislation to address this issue. The AFN argues that denialism is a form of hate speech that reopens wounds for survivors and fuels anti-Indigenous racism.
