Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first paid job? The News21 fellowship.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, but not professionally. My parents had a typewriter that I loved to play around typing on as a kid. I just liked the mechanics of it.

How is social media changing news?

It gives real-time insight into news and events, but it also brings so many new voices into the conversation and allows ANYONE to report.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Fletch.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It can mean so many things, from telling people's stories to informing the public what they need for self-government to whatever comes next.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Don't just tell me what happened/will happen, but tell me what the stakes are. Why does this matter and to whom?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My trusty Canon camera, my iPhone (Evernote, iTalk, ProCamera, Twitter apps), Adobe Creative Suite, MS Word, Final Cut.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter for news, Facebook for keeping in touch with people I went to high school with.

Who do you wish followed you?

I follow a bunch of the Fast Company staff. I wish they followed me back.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to write, take photos and make videos, but I wanted that all to be meaningful and a part of something bigger than myself.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes - I was a reporter (usually sports) and an opinion writer.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

So far, I'm most proud of my work with News21 covering charities that are supposed to be helping veterans, but are falling short.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

There's no reason to wait. Start reporting now.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Late at night or first thing in the morning.
