How to Turn Data Governance into a Decision System
The Real Purpose of Data Governance Organizations make thousands of decisions every day. Some keep operations running. Others allocate resources, set priorities, manage risk, demonstrate compliance, or commit the organization to a long-term course. All of them depend on data. Data becomes information. Information becomes knowledge. Knowledge informs judgment and decision-making. This chain shapes performance, resilience, risk management, and regulatory accountability.
Why Data Governance Still Isn’t Driving Better Decisions (or Transformation)
The Governance Gap Most organizations have invested in data governance. They have a data governance office, data owners, policies, committees, repositories, and a data catalog. They have documented processes and trained teams. Yet machinery exists far more visibly than the business impact does. Compliance still must be demonstrated manually, audit after audit. Risk decisions still rely on data whose fitness for purpose has not been established in advance.
Why Traditional Data Governance Cannot Secure Business Decisions
Data Governance Was Built to Answer a Different Question Data governance has matured around a familiar set of objects and practices: glossaries, data dictionaries, catalogs, lineage, data domains, quality rules, policies, roles, responsibilities, and controls. These mechanisms have delivered real progress. They help organizations understand what data means, where it resides, where it came from, how it was transformed, who is responsible for it, and whether it meets defined quality thresholds.

Best Execution and Selection of Mutual Fund Share Classes for Clients
Written by: Charles Black | Joot In 2019, the SEC closed its mutual funds share class selection disclosure initiative. This initiative allowed investment advisers to self-report to the SEC instances where they failed to disclose conflicts of interest and to implement reasonably designed policies and procedures relating to the selection of mutual fund share classes for clients. The Impeachable Offense
Editor's Note: In 1974, a law professor named Charles L. Black published an extraordinary brief volume, entitled, Impeachment: A Handbook. It is the finest text on the subject I have ever read. With the subject of impeachment on many people's minds these days, we received permission from Yale University Press to republish the portion of Black's book that discusses the parameters of the impeachable offense. I also asked Jane Chong to write an essay applying the lessons of Black's book to our time.

Opinion: Choosing veep candidates needs to start soon
For the presidential campaigns, beginning early and devoting adequate time to vetting and selecting a running mate has never been as important as it is this year. Typically, a candidate's campaign begins the vice presidential nominee selection process after mathematically securing their party's nomination, and it requires at least eight weeks to be thorough. However, two factors complicate that time line this year.
