Eugenio Suárez was out on the field early in the afternoon on Thursday for extra batting practice. He took swing after swing after swing against velocity. He was hitting foam balls, which is a drill that the Reds have been doing all season to help hitters who have struggled against pitches 95 mph+. Six hours later, Suárez stepped up to the plate with the game-tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth. Flamethrowing Phillies closer Jhoan Duran was on the mound.

Cincinnati Reds: Second base still a work in progress with Arroyo, McLain splitting time

As the Cincinnati Reds enter the second half of the season, their plan at second base remains a work in progress as Matt McLain and Edwin Arroyo split time at that position. McLain entered the season as the Reds’ every day second baseman, but offensively he has gone on to take a statistical step back in 2026. “I’ve got to play better,” McLain said. “I’ve got to keep it simple, work hard and control what I can.” In spring training, there was a lot of optimism about where he stood.

Sal Stewart's two-strike opposite field power shines against the Phillies

Before the Cincinnati Reds’ game on Wednesday night, Sal Stewart and JJ Bleday were challenging themselves by facing tough pitches on the machine in the batting cage. “He was going oppo, oppo, oppo,” Bleday said. The opposite field swing was locked in, and Stewart went on to hit two opposite field homers in an 11-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Both of Stewart’s homers on Wednesday were with two strikes. In 2026, the rookie has been one of the best two-strike hitters in all of baseball.
