CINCINNATI (WXIX) — Duke Energy is offering tips to customers on how to keep cooling costs under control during the hottest summer months. The utility company says air conditioning becomes one of the biggest drivers of higher electric bills when heat indexes approach 100 degrees. “This week, since we’ve seen temperatures pushing close to what feels like 100 degrees outside, that really means it’s going to be working harder,” said Matt Martin of Duke Energy.

ALLIANCE, Neb. (KNOP/Gray News) - A mother in Nebraska is accused of killing a 9-month-old after holding a blanket over the child’s head. Alyssa Parkins faces four charges, including intentional child abuse resulting in death and strangulation resulting in death. According to the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to Box Butte General Hospital on the evening of June 22 after the infant died. A Box Butte County mother is in custody, accused of killing her nine-month-old infant.
GILBERT, Ariz.(KPHO/Gray News) - A toddler in Arizona was discovered to be alive in the morgue of a hospital after being pronounced dead by a doctor hours earlier. The 18-month-old was pulled from a backyard swimming pool during a Super Bowl party around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 8. According to the police report, the toddler had been floating face down in the pool for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
DETROIT (WXYZ) — A graduation celebration turned into tragedy in Detroit over the weekend when a 14-year-old girl drowned in a river while trying to save her younger cousin. Glenn Bradley lost his 14-year-old daughter, Amina Bradley, on Saturday when she drowned in the Detroit River. Bradley said his family was at a graduation party at Maharris Gentry Park when Amina and her 9-year-old cousin went by the water. Bradley said the younger cousin fell in the water, and Amina went in to save her.
CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Gaining freedom from the heat will be a challenge for the eastern U.S. heading into the long Fourth of July weekend, prompting some communities to cancel, postpone or otherwise alter their Independence Day plans. Dangerous, record-breaking heat will continue across much of the central and eastern U.S. through Friday and will continue along the East Coast through the weekend, the National Weather Service said Thursday.
