Exposome research comes of age
Three decades ago, toxicologist Gary Miller set out to identify chemical exposures that increase Parkinson’s disease risk. “There was really strong evidence that living near farms, drinking well water, and having exposure to pesticides increase the risk,” he recalls. But which chemicals were to blame? The exposome includes every aspect of a person’s environment that could have health impacts over one’s lifetime—factors ranging from chemical exposures to sun exposure to routine exercise and diet.
