Colistin (polymyxin E) belongs to a class of famous antibiotics, polymyxins, which is a class of cationic lipopeptides that consist of a fatty acyl N-terminus, a tripeptide side chain, and a cyclic heptapeptide (Fig. 1B) (Storm et al., 1977). These nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) are biosynthesized by the pmx biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC) in Paenibacillus species (Fig. 1A) (Choi et al., 2009).
