As oral, but not i.p., OPNhi supplementation restored DC hematopoiesis, we hypothesized that oral OPN mediates its effects by altering the composition of the neonatal gut microbiome. To implicate a role for the microbiota, we enriched the fecal microbiota of neonates that had received oral OPNhi or OPNlo and then transplanted these two microbial communities to OPN−/−-reared neonates.
