In Search of The Scream in Norway
In Search of The Scream in Norway By Chris Epting In my mind, all travelers are hunters. What do you hunt for when you travel? Experiences, people, souvenirs? I hunt for places. We were in Oslo, Norway, my teenaged son and I, spending a few days before hopping a ship to explore around the Arctic archipelago called Svalbard. Our first day, we stopped at the National Gallery, not for the Van Goghs or Gaugins or Cezannes. We wanted to see the most famous local painting: Edvard Munch's The Scream.
Next Week in Music | Sept. 9-15 • 19 New Books
Dave Mason and The Doors. Arthur Lee and Agnostic Front. Punks and pics. Taylor and travelogues. Politics and philosophy. And the usual discographical deep dives. Suffice to say that there’s a lot of rock ’n’ roll to read about next week. Let’s crack the covers: THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Roll And Roll Hall of Famer Dave Mason found early success with the band Traffic, establishing himself as a skilled guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter who penned the classic Feelin’ Alright?

The history of the cheeseburger: Almost as satisfying as a burger itself!
Believe it or not, there are three places that all claim to be the birthplace of the cheeseburger. How can this be? Sometimes, similar ideas are thought of around the same time in history. These “coincidences” sometimes lead to arguments over who had the idea first, as is the case with the cheeseburger. 2776 Speer Blvd.
Tyrus Live; common-sense comedy the perfect antidote during these increasingly unfunny times
Veteran's Memorial District Auditorium, Clovis, CA: I recently had the pleasure of attending Tyrus' stand-up comedy show, and it was an unforgettable experience. Known as a popular Fox News commentator and pro wrestler, Tyrus showcased his undeniable talent for storytelling and humor, weaving together moments from his life, both from his best-selling memoir, "Just Tyrus," and from the American modern-day political landscape.
For baseball and history fans, this museum is not to be missed
If you’re on the road in the Denver area this summer and you love baseball history, there is but one place to visit: the National Ballpark Museum. Located a short toss (one block) from Coors Field, the museum is dedicated to the long-gone “green cathedrals” where much of baseball’s lore and myth was written. The museum prides itself in one-of-a-kind treasures, including those from the original 14 classic ballparks, and is the only museum dedicated to ballparks.

Well, for those moments on the road when you’d love to do nothing more than slow down, relax and curl up with someone special over a good strong drink, why not make it something memorable – or even historic?

In memory of Martin Luther King Jr.-A historic site tells an important story
By Chris Epting I love museums that feature “on-site” history. That is to say, something happened there, and that’s why it’s a museum. I think that’s why the La Brea Tar Pits museum was such a special place to take my son in his early years. He loved paleontology, but the fact that everything in the museum had been excavated from the very property where the museum sat made it extra special.

Death Valley isn't dead: The magic of the life inside our great national park
By Chris Epting I think that it’s time to rename Death Valley. Yes, I know the moniker has all that great foreboding mystique. Yes, the name itself is probably what draws many of the visitors in the first place. After all, when you tell people you’re going to “Death Valley” it’s a statement – a marker that says you’re interested in exploring the edge.

The Site of an Early Crush - Royal Rock Camp at King’s College
I’m not sure where the camp’s name of Royal Rock in Briarcliff Manor came from, but some kids attributed it to a big rock that sat on the sweeping front lawn of a beautiful estate house where the camp was based. The rock was large enough so that several kids could sit on it at once, and it was a touchstone of sorts: A safe area for capture the flag, a spot on the horizon to race to when having relays, or a place to sit and have a snack. It afforded a majestic view of the Hudson River as well.

My Friendship With John Cheever
Literature has been the salvation of the damned, literature has inspired and guided lovers, routed despair and can perhaps in this case save the world. – John Cheever We lived in Ossining. I was about 13 years old and had decided that I wanted to be a writer (especially if the baseball player thing didn’t work out). When I announced this to my parents, my mom suggested I write a neighbor of ours to see if he might be able to supply some professional guidance.

Roadside stop: Marilyn Monroe was once California's "Artichoke Queen"
It was in the 1953 film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, that Marilyn Monroe dazzled moviegoers with her version of the song, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.” Clad in purple and surrounded by a cast of tuxedoed actors, the performance became one of her most iconic. Ironically, it was also diamonds that earned her some of her first professional recognition. In the summer of 1948, the then-struggling actress and model made her way to Salinas in the Monterey Bay area of California.

DOWNTOWN LIFE: JOHN OATES RECALLS HIS EARLY DAYS IN NYC
Hall & Oates - photo by Barbara Wilson When Daryl Hall and John Oates arrived in New York from Philadelphia in 1972, they were a folk-soul duo signed to Atlantic Records. The city, particularly the Downtown scenes at the Mercer Art Center and Max’s Kansas City, would have a profound impact on them personally and musically. Even after their music became MTV and radio staples, they continued to live in New York and the city continued to sift its vibes into their songs.
