Work stoppages at West Coast ports are placing thousands of jobs at risk. These recent job actions stem from the lack of a labor contract between the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union. The ILWU has been working without a contract since July 1. The union represents 20,000 dockworkers across 29 West Coast ports. One might recall in 2002 that a 10-day shutdown at every West Coast port resulted in the U.S. economy losing $1 billion per day.
