COLD LAKE - Confident in who she is, Brooke Metchewais is ready to tackle a what is sure to be a “busy, impactful year,” after being crowned Miss Indigenous Canada 2026, last month. Metchewais, who is originally from Cold Lake First Nations and now lives in Chilliwack, B.C., was one of the 20 delegates from across Canada who were selected to run for the title of Miss Indigenous Canada. The competition took place from July 20-24 in Six Nations of the Grand River, Ont.

International graduates seek answers after reported refusals of post-graduation work permits

LAC LA BICHE - Over 500 international students who recently graduated from programs offered through Portage College gathered at the Lac La Biche campus last week to express concerns about changes to the federal Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program. The students, many who travelled from Calgary by bus, gathered inside the McGrane Theatre on July 21.

LAC LA BICHE - Joel and Alysha Jackson are celebrating their second win at the Alberta Wife Carrying Championship, after securing the top spot in Lac La Biche on July 25. The Edmonton-based couple crossed the finish line in one minute and 11 seconds to clinch first place during the most recent edition of the event, which played out in front of a large crowd at the Lac La Biche Agricultural Society grounds.
