Every day, thousands of investors settle for mediocrity. It’s not their fault… They’ve been fed the same advice for years: “Buy the S&P 500.” As you probably know, the S&P 500 is by far the most watched, talked about, and written-about stock benchmark in the world. Tens of millions of Americans own S&P 500 index funds through their retirement accounts. And there’s nothing wrong with that. The S&P 500 is a great way to own a basket of America’s biggest and most established companies.

Hey, Graham Stephan... Stop the Nonsense

YouTube creator and finance educator Graham Stephan says it’s “awful news for everyone in their 20s and 30s” that the S&P 500 recently struck a new all-time high. I couldn’t disagree with him more. The S&P 500 hitting an all-time high is not “awful news” for people in their 20s and 30s. In fact, a warning like this can do real damage. It makes investing sound like something to fear precisely when young people should be getting started. It’s also factually wrong.

The other week, I was on a work trip in Vermont. One morning over breakfast, I got to talking with a woman at the table next to me. She asked what I did for work, and I told her I'm in the investment research business. At RiskHedge, we spend our days researching disruptor stocks with the potential to multiply in value. Historically, technology has been the biggest breeding ground for those kinds of investments. I gave her Nvidia (NVDA) as our prime example.
