What was your first job as a journalist?
A bylined piece for Staffing Industry Analysts on the nursing shortage. I write as an operator, not a reporter.

How is social media changing news?
People are consuming or finding their new on social media more than going to actual news sites.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Lois Lane. She kept doing the actual work while standing next to someone who could do it in a second.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Publishing the version that's true rather than the version that's easier to write.

I don't have one.

I enjoy writing to help others.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
I'm not a journalist, so take this from someone on the other side of the pitch: the writers I take seriously are the ones who ask a second question. The first answer is always the rehearsed one.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Mornings. Keep it to a few sentences and tell me what the piece is actually about, and you'll get an answer either way.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The one that was three lines long and clearly written after reading my work, not my title.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A four-paragraph press release with no ask in it. I still don't know what they wanted me to do.
What's your favorite drink?
Coke Zero
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On the water with my family, or in the stands at one of my boys' games.

Newsweek
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That untapped potential is a talent problem. It's almost never ability. It's people who've quietly decided how far they go, and nobody has questioned it, including them.
