I spent some time preparing a submission regarding the draft DCP for the redevelopment of the Mullumbimby Hospital site. I submitted this to the reviewing panel at Council and I copied it to the mayor and all the councillors. I did not receive any response from the review panel, but I thought I might have done from at least the mayor and/or one of the councillors. The silence was deafening.

High-speed rail

I was extremely disappointed to hear that the federal government had decided to scrap the section of the high-speed rail from Forbes to Brisbane. My reasons are twofold. Firstly, so much money has already been invested in this project and this will largely be wasted. Secondly, the long-term financial benefit of reducing the amount of freight transported by road together with the low carbon footprint of rail compared with road will be lost.

Having reviewed the latest plans for the redevelopment of the old Mullumbimby hospital site, I was amazed to see that no staged, old-age facilities have been included. The first main reason for this concern is that, because there are inadequate facilities in Mullumbimby and the surrounding area, some beds are being taken up in the Byron regional hospital by old people who have nowhere else to go. This is surely a waste of the limited number of hospital beds and the nursing staff to maintain them.
