Champions 1st Edition (1981) I recently posted that July 4th was the 50th Anniversary of the RuneQuest roleplaying game. It’s a game that revolutionized the hobby in many ways. One of the most significant ways it did this, something that is rightly lamented by game designers/critics like Jeffro Johnson, was to move the hobby away from its wargaming roots (both chit and map and miniature wargaming with the shift away from miniature campaign play having the largest impact).

Three years ago Professor Dungeon Master announced that July was going to be Independent Tabletop RPG Month on his YouTube channel. I’m not 100% sure that he invented the concept, but when I did a quick Google to read about it to help with guidelines for recommendations his was the first really informative link that showed up on my Daily Me (see Cass Sunstein’s excellent #Republic for what I’m on about there).

While I was giving a final editing pass on my recent article on Toxic Fandom, I was reminded of one of my favorite game designers and his final (unfinished) game design project. As regular readers know, I am a HUGE fan of superhero roleplaying games. It’s my favorite genre to play and the superhero games are some of the best mechanically designed projects in the table top gaming space. It’s a genre that constantly pushes the boundaries of game design into interesting paths.
