More than two months after hearing oral arguments, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting birthright citizenship is unconstitutional. The justices relied on a long-settled understanding of the 14th Amendment, adopted after the Civil War, and more recent federal laws in ruling that anyone born in the country, with very limited exceptions, is a citizen.

In a pair of opinions issued Monday morning, the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook for now but allowed the removal of Rebecca Kelly Slaughter, one of two Democratic members of the Federal Trade Commission whom Trump dismissed in March. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote both opinions.
