In a historic moment, the Senate passed the Inflation Reduction Act and the largest climate investment in US history. Credit and blame are not hard to assess: passage was only made possible because all 50 Senate Democrats voted in favor of the bill, leaving Vice President Harris’s tie-breaking vote to make the difference. Not a single Republican in the House or Senate voted in favor of it.

Dear Zahra, On your seven-month birthday, a super massive black hole was seen at the center of our galaxy. The week I celebrated my first Mother’s Day with you, the Senate voted against codifying Roe v. Wade into law. I have been fighting to ensure that this earth will still be habitable when you grow older. But in the midst of my struggle against continued climate change inaction, another struggle against the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade has arisen. I am sorry, Zahra.

Andrea McGimsey and Dr. Christine James Hurricane season, which officially ended this week, was one for the record books. For the first time in recorded history, the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico saw 30 named storms form, and 12 of those storms hit the American mainland. Although most of Florida was relatively lucky this year with the path of the storms, Pensacola and the panhandle were hit by Hurricane Sally and other tropical storms.
