3.2.2 QOL measure The QLQ-C30 consists of five function scales (i.e. physical, role, cognitive, emotional and social), seven symptom scales (i.e. fatigue, pain, nausea and vomiting, dyspnoea, insomnia, appetite loss, and constipation), a financial difficulties scale, and an overall health and QOL scale (Aaronson et al., 1993).

CLINICAL INVESTIGATION Funding information: National Institute on Aging, Grant/Award Numbers: P01AG066605, P30AG044281 Abstract Background We sought to determine the population-level associations between persistent pain and subsequent changes in physical function, cognitive function, and well-being, outcomes important to older adults. Methods We used data from National Health Aging Trends Study (NHATS) of community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries age 65+ from 2011 to 2019.

Victor was a man in his late 50s, hospitalized with significant bowel obstructions from metastatic cancer. Despite maximal medical care, he was dying. His ultimate wish was to spend his remaining time at home, where, from his favorite chair in the living room, he could listen to the Atlantic Ocean’s melodic waves. But he had no family to help with his physical needs and hospice only provided one-on-one care for a handful of hours per week.
