The impact of atmospheric turbulence on astronomical imaging was first recognized centuries ago by Christiaan Huygens4 and Isaac Newton5. The first conceptual adaptive optics designs to compensate for the effects of turbulence were published independently by Horace Babcock6 and Vladimir Linnik7 in the 1950s. The U.S. Department of Defense then funded the development of the first adaptive-optics systems in the 1970s for the purpose of imaging foreign satellites during the Cold War8.
