For almost a century, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle has stood as one of the defining ideas of quantum physics: a particle's position and momentum cannot be known at the same time with absolute precision. The more you know about one, the less you know about the other. In a new study published in Science Advances, our team demonstrates how to work around this restriction, not by breaking physics but by reshaping uncertainty itself.
A new twist on Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle can sharpen quantum sensors

Quantum-enhanced multiparameter sensing in a single mode
Abstract Precise measurements underpin scientific and technological advancements. Quantum mechanics provides an avenue to enhance precision, but it comes with a restriction: Incompatible observables, such as position and momentum, cannot be simultaneously measured to arbitrary accuracy as decreed by Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. This restriction can be bypassed by instead measuring commuting modular observables, which are counterparts to the naturally incompatible observables.
Benchmarking Bosonic Modes for Quantum Information with Randomized Displacements
Bosonic modes are essential components in quantum technologies such as quantum computing, quantum simulation, and sensing. However, current methods to characterize these bosonic modes are limited. This paper introduces a new protocol, randomized bosonic benchmarking (RBB), which applies random displacements to a mode, and allows identification of underlying noise mechanisms and their characteristics from only a few measurements.
Predicting molecular vibronic spectra using time-domain analog quantum simulation
Predicting molecular vibronic spectra using time-domain analog quantum simulation Spectroscopy is one of the most accurate probes of the molecular world. However, predicting molecular spectra accurately is computationally difficult because of the presence of entanglement between electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom.
