Drew Brees breaks down son Baylen’s two-touchdown night
Baylen Brees watched his father throw hundreds of touchdown passes during his Pro Football Hall of Fame career that included 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. On Thursday, it was the father’s turn to see the son make plays of his own. His view from the sideline could not have been much better. Drew Brees handled play-calling duties for Santa Fe Christian (California) as Baylen accounted for two touchdowns — one passing and one receiving — in the Eagles’ 41-7 victory over Newman.
A New Orleans area high school has a new starting QB named Brees — and he wears No. 9
Haynes Academy football coach P.J. Sprunk didn’t have to think long when his quarterback asked to wear No. 9. After all, the quarterback’s name is Brees. For 15 seasons, New Orleans Saints fans watched Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees wear that number while leading the franchise to its only Super Bowl championship. Nine months after that Super Bowl, Robert and Rachel Westerfield welcomed their fourth child, a boy they named Brees.

What state champion Edna Karr and the Catholic League learned about themselves in the spring
Spring is done. Now the summertime, two-time reigning state champion Edna Karr and the other seven schools in District 9-5A are conducting 7-on-7 drills and other workouts in preparation for the 2026 football season. Here is some of what the eight 9-5A schools learned about themselves in the spring and beyond.
The LHSAA is moving three state championships to new locations, including one to New Orleans
The LHSAA announced three venue site changes for state championships beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. The boys basketball state championships will move to the Cajundome at UL in Lafayette after 13 seasons at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles. The state wrestling tournament will take place at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans after being held in Bossier City and Baton Rouge in recent years.
St. Paul's Shartle, Ayala claim coveted sweatshirts (STF print only)
St. Paul’s senior Caleb Shartle knew the feeling that came with reaching the final at the Louisiana Classic and leaving without one of those navy-blue hooded sweatshirts. He did not want to experience it a second time. “Getting second, everyone thinks making it to the final, that’s good enough,” Shartle said.
New Orleans All-Metro small schools’ football team highlighted by a state title winner
Jayden Obiekwe, Riverside Riverside senior Jayden Obiekwe never played a football game inside the Caesars Superdome. With each passing week, the standout running back said he believed his opportunity would arrive. “Week by week, it’s just in my head that we actually have a chance to make a run to be able to do this,” Obiekwe said.
Logan Diggs, Andrew Jones among South Louisiana spice set for Sugar Bowl
Logan Diggs stood in the backfield to the left of Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, slightly bent at the waist and with his hands against the outer part of his thighs. Chambliss clapped, and the ball was snapped — not to Chambliss, but to Diggs, who quickly raised his hands to catch the shotgun snap and followed his blockers 3 yards into the end zone.
Richard Anderson explains signing with LSU, Lane Kiffin. ‘It got a little rocky toward the end’
When all was said and done, Richard Anderson stood before a purple and gold backdrop with an LSU hat atop his head, just as the five-star defensive lineman from Edna Karr had planned for more than a year. Only the recent coaching change that brought Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to LSU caused the 6-foot-4, 340-pound defensive line standout to have second thoughts about his decision to sign with LSU. Anderson is a five-star by most major recruiting services.

Edna Karr edges American Heritage in overtime thriller at Superdome
Edna Karr junior Brayan Castellon made a field goal that sent the game into overtime and senior quarterback John Johnson scored the touchdown that put the Cougars in position to win against another nationally ranked team. But not until senior linebacker Kevin Martin wrapped his arms around a ballcarrier and pushed him out of bounds could Karr - at No. 12 in the MaxPreps national rankings - celebrate a 24-17 victory over No. 23 American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) at the Caesars Superdome.
Terrence, powerful offensive line help Rummel pull away from University High
Jaden Terrence let the kickoff hit off his shoulder pads and bounce toward the goal line. But once he picked it up, he saw nothing but open field as he ran from one end of the Cesars Superdome turf to the other for a lead-changing touchdown as first-half time expired. The Raiders added another three touchdowns in the second half on the way to a 30-17 victory on Friday that marked the fourth consecutive win over University High in as many seasons. The first three meetings had close scores.
Former Edna Karr football star and Ole Miss freshman Corey Adams shot dead in Tennessee

The deputies attempted “life-saving measures,” the release said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Scripted to shine: Pitching plan works to near perfection for Legion baseball state champs
Brody Bower arrived in New Orleans knowing he would need to wait his turn, and if everything went according to plan, the right-hander would take the mound in the American Legion baseball state final for the second year in a row. On Wednesday, that plan played out to near perfection, as Bower pitched seven shutout innings and the Bossier Phillies secured another Legion state title, this time with a 6-0 victory against the Houma-based Southland Hogs at Kirsch-Rooney Stadium.
Rummel-Curtis to rematch, St. Charles earns high seed in LHSAA playoff brackets
|
No. 9 Rummel and No. 8 John Curtis will face each other in the regional round of the LHSAA baseball playoffs next week, as shown when the LHSAA released playoff brackets on Tuesday. The best-of-three series between the two District 9-5A schools will be a rematch from when Curtis beat Rummel in the state semifinals last season. Curtis won that game 2-1 with a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 11th inning. The schools split their two regular-season games this season.

Once 'undersized,' this New Orleans area football star won $20K scholarship from Allstate Sugar Bowl

But he outshined most others when they were in the classroom. On Tuesday, the Allstate Sugar Bowl recognized Beasley as the Oliver Delery Scholarship award recipient and presented him with a $20,000 scholarship check.
The latest LSU football pledge from Destrehan shines at more than one position
Jabari Mack played a versatile role on the Destrehan football team last season as a junior. Primarily a wide receiver during his first two high school seasons, the speedy Mack got pressed into playing quarterback and defensive back when injuries on both sides of the ball caused coach Marcus Scott and his staff to make some changes. Mack handled those duties so well that Scott lamented not having him do more during his first two seasons. “We should have probably done it as a freshman,” Scott said.

Randy Livingston explains decision to leave alma mater Newman after 6 seasons as coach

Randy Livington felt late in the Newman basketball season that it would be his final one as the head coach at his alma mater. And he coached the entire season with his wife and their two young children living in faraway Australia so that they could attend school in her native country. That pull of family was part of what drew Livingston away from Newman.
