Rising climate impacts have created a global debate on rapidly mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. In recent years, achieving global net zero emissions by 2050 has gained momentum after the IPCC special report on 1.5 °C [1]. As of October 2023, 78 countries had announced a net-zero target either as a law or in policy documents, and many more have proposed net-zero targets [2].
