1 Introduction Strigolactones (SLs) are carotenoid-derived terpenoid lactones originally identified for their roles in stimulating seed germination of the parasitic plant witchweed (Striga lutea L.) [1] and inducing hyphal branching in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi [2]. They were subsequently recognized as hormones that can inhibit branching in higher plants [3, 4]. The biosynthetic pathway and core signaling components of SLs have been well characterized.
