This year marks the 158th anniversary of the ratification of the 14th amendment, and 160 years since it passed congress. The post-Civil War amendment granted freedoms and rights to formerly enslaved people, and guaranteed citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. More than a century later, the 14th is one of the most litigated amendments.

Repair cafés across Chicagoland help restore old and broken items for free

In 2009, the first repair café event was held in Amsterdam. Since then these events — where people can bring in their busted appliances, ripped clothes, or old devices to be restored for free by helpful volunteers — have grown into an international phenomenon. While most of the nearly 2,500 official repair cafés are in Europe, more and more are opening in the U.S. and there are already several across Chicagoland.

Architects of Evanston reparations program stand firm against DOJ attacks

The U.S. The Department of Justice is joining a lawsuit that challenges the City of Evanston’s reparations program. Mayor Daniel Biss declared the historic initiative passed in 2019 an effort to address harm caused by discriminatory housing policies and disinvestment in Black communities. The 2024 lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch alleges the program is unconstitutional and is in violation of the 14th Amendment on the grounds of race discrimination.
