2011 - Minority Issues Reporting

Whistle-blowers working for the state leaked hundreds of names of illegal immigrants living in Utah to the media. It created a huge controversy and safety concern for those people and their families. I went and talked with one of the immigrants in Spanish to get her story, since she did not speak any English. Raquel is an illegal immigrant, and she wonders how her name, along with other personal information, ended up on a list of more than 1,300 alleged illegal immigrants in Utah. Raquel thinks legislation that would make it easier for state workers to bring names of illegal immigrants forward to law enforcement without being punished would be "no bueno," which translates in English to "no good."

The Slide Divide. Investigating a community issue where homes have been approved for decades to be built on a proven landslide prone area of a mountain. Washington County resident Carl Palmer, president of Mountain Valley Water Protection Association, takes legal action against water rights and new wells being drilled on Cedar Mountain. With the assistance of geologist reports, Palmer helps convince Iron County Planning Commission that Cedar Mountain is on a "massive landslide" and no environmental impact study has been done on the area and should be done before more homes are built.
