Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Reporter. My first story as a professional journalist was about a chicken ordinance in the city. It was no cat fashion show, but hey.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. At home, never at work. My parents had a few growing up. I just played around on them. Never seriously used one.

How is social media changing news?

It is ALWAYS breaking now. You have to be on social media. If you aren't you are reading yesterday's news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

None. Because the good ones should be out there being the ones they write movies and stories about.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means being not only a master story teller but also finding the truth and letting the public know.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#ohots Overheard on the Scanner. Seriously go check them out, they are hilarious!

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Send me a message via email with a human interest angle. Those are the kind I will pick up and go with.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Smartphone, laptop, Final Cut, Twitter, Facebook, video camera and of course the trusty notebook and pen.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. Streamlined and quick.

Who do you wish followed you?

Anderson Cooper. Once he responded to a tweet, so that was pretty surprising. ;)

Why did you become a journalist?

I had a desire to do a public service and to investigate. I found it enjoyable and fulfilling to break a story.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I worked for a college newspaper. I started as a part-time reporter, then became news editor over the years after I caught the bug.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

One about a woman who was almost brain dead, but has fully recovered after a tragic motorcycle accident. I love human interest stories.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Network. It is all about who you know. Use the heck out of social media to make connections and update local reporters of your success.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime! Beggers can't be choosers!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Police botched a crime scene.

What's your favorite drink?

Apple Beer Five
