What was your first job as a journalist?

Unpaid—high school newspaper. Paid—typing up wedding announcements, social news and news briefs for the Indiana (Pa.) Gazette.

To do right by the people who honor you by entrusting you with their stories.

Why did you become a journalist?

Passion for telling stories overtook perfect pitch/music study. Also, inability to grit teeth through 1 more kid mangling "Camptown Races"

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was a reporter and assistant editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"From Chaos to Courage," the story of the passengers and crew of United Flight 93.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Work hard. Pray hard. Tell the truth. Be curious. Avoid capture. Watch "Almost Famous" often, & listen to Lester Bangs. Love every minute.
