We can try to improve the way we think. We can try to make more money. Have more stability. Get a better job. But all of these things, say Cindy Goodman Stulberg and Richard Frey, are red herrings. “We want to let you in on a little secret,” they write.

For years, the first line of defense for depression has been pharmaceuticals, but in their new book Feeling Better: Beat Depression and Improve Your Relationships with Interpersonal Psychotherapy (New World Library, November 20, 2018), psychologists and authors Cindy Goodman Stulberg and Ronald J. Frey, PhD, say that it is actually our relationships that offer the most effective path to healing.

(Of course, not changing is also a choice, with its own set of consequences.) I can tell you that in more than thirty years as a therapist I’ve seen people of all ages, shapes, genders, colors, and cultures make small changes in their lives that have had important, positive effects on their relationships and their mood.
