About 1,400 residents missed in public notification of escaped prisoner: fire chief

The names of about 1,450 residents who registered for an emergency public-notification system were dropped during the transition to Metchosin’s new fire chief in the spring. That means they were not included in the initial public notification after the escape of Ernest Egon Jensen from the minimum-security penitentiary on June 28. Jensen was found dead the next day at the prison’s shoreline.

Social-media posts not enough for inmate-escape alerts: Metchosin councillor Original

Notifying area residents of the escape of potentially violent prisoners from William Head penitentiary should not be left to social-media posts and emails, a Metchosin councillor said this week. “Facebook and email just doesn’t cut it,” Coun. Steve Gray said at a council meeting. Gray’s comments came in the wake of a late-June incident where an inmate, a convicted murderer, was reported missing from the minimum security Metchosin facility. Ernest Egon Jensen was found dead a day later.

Campbell River detox facility set to open next summer

A six-bed detox facility in Campbell River that’s two years behind schedule is expected to open next summer. In March 2024, the province announced that after an “extensive search,” it had secured a renovated house on Nicholls Road near Campbell River & District Hospital for a withdrawal management clinic. It planned to open in November that same year.
