by Claire Nolan To no one’s surprise, the 2025 local election was about rates, after the Wellington City Council passed an 18% rates increase. But not for the left, who abhorred the zero rates ‘Independent together’ mantra. This new council has improved the ratepayers’ lot, and has made some good decisions, including cancelling the Golden Mile, getting the rates increase down to 5.9%, and looking at its processes. It works well when it votes as a centrist council.

temperance (and hotels) in Newtown

by Claire Nolan Newtown is one of the oldest suburbs in Wellington. It emerged from the dense slums of Te Aro Flats and was part of William Mein Smith’s town plan in 1840. By 1858 there were 25 people living in Newtown. By the 1870s many more people were building homes and moving there. Those early streets were Green, Donald Maclean, Normanby, and Emmett – built from the mid 1870s. Along with Riddiford and other side streets, this was the ‘old town’ of Newtown. It is important early heritage.

Fighting for cottages

by Claire Nolan Some Newtown residents have been fighting for four years against higher buildings among one-storey cottages. But not against houses being built at a human scale, as they have been built at 30 – 50 a year over the last thirty years. Recently a resource consent application was received at the WCC to build two four-storey buildings to replace a cottage at 28 Rhodes Street. This street is part of the old town of Newtown and some of the housing would have been built in the 1870s.
