by Claire Nolan To no one’s surprise, the 2025 local election was about rates, after the Wellington City Council passed an 18% rates increase. But not for the left, who abhorred the zero rates ‘Independent together’ mantra. This new council has improved the ratepayers’ lot, and has made some good decisions, including cancelling the Golden Mile, getting the rates increase down to 5.9%, and looking at its processes. It works well when it votes as a centrist council.
