article Grape selection and harvest timing are important to make more easy-drinking reds that are perfect for summer days, but techniques like second wines, water dilutions, or even blending with fruit wines can also play a big role. article Not all red wine grapes are destined to make a big, blockbuster wine. But even with the right grapes, a winemaker still needs to consider techniques for power, structure, and balance in that bold red wine.
Your Paycheck Stops in Retirement, But Your Life Doesn't: An Expert Guide to Planning for a Confident Future
Many Americans eye retirement with trepidation. The years that should be a time to relax, travel, start a hobby or hang out with the grandkids are a source of anxiety for many. According to an AARP survey, 61% of Americans worry they won't have enough money to fund their retirement. In some cases, there is a reason for uneasiness. Most of us spend our lives depending on a regular paycheck to meet our needs and wants. As long as we're working, that paycheck shows up and provides a sense of security.
Game-Changing Innovations
Readers of my books and columns who are making wine at home are sometimes frustrated that technologies I discuss such as flash détente, electrodialysis, and micro-oxygenation are not available to small-scale winemaking, and perhaps never will be. Yet there are many recent advances that are a boon to the micro-practitioner. Some are exclusively suited to small production and do not scale up for the large commercial industry.
Understanding and Controlling Brettanomyces
Some consider Brettanomyces a spoilage yeast. Some consider it the heart of the great wines of Bordeaux. Truthfully, it’s probably both. I studied Brettanomyces for my master’s thesis at UC-Davis in the early ‘80s, so I’ve got quite a bit of information to share, hopefully some fresh and new. Before we dig into the impact it plays on wine and how to control it, let’s first explore variability in Brettanomyces, beginning with the diversity in morphology that confounds microscopy.
Dental AI: Helping dentists diagnose sooner and patients accept treatment earlier
AI has been the topic d'jour since ChatGPT launched publicly in late 2022. While many exciting generative AI use cases have made headlines, when I think about the value of AI, I think about what’s happening in our industry. I think about the real-world value dental AI offers us and our patients. The dental industry's charter As a dental community, delivering excellent treatment is our number one priority.
Pearls for Your Practice: QuickConnect Anatomy Band by Rhondium
I love new technology. Whether it’s a new app or feature on my iPhone or a new device in dentistry, anything bleeding edge, I am drawn to. In my office, we use our iTero to scan every patient, and I use my SprintRay Pro 95 to print any model I need. Recently I had a patient who broke a tooth on a partial denture. I tried to figure out a way to do a scan, but nothing really worked. I had to break out the alginate and do a pickup impression. The same thing can be true for basic restorative dentistry.
Dental equipment financing: Purchase or lease?
All business owners require some type of equipment, and dentists are no exception. Whether just starting out and needing everything from intraoral cameras and exam chairs to waiting room furniture, or long-established with multiple locations and hundreds of employees, dentists need equipment. Equipment also breaks and wears out over time and thus needs replacing.
Nudes, moods, and bad attitudes: First do no harm
Do you remember that little piece of paper called the Hippocratic oath? We all signed it. Is it important to you? Do you think it matters to our profession? Does anything matter in the court of public opinion today? Friends, Dentistry Unmasked was born to share the truth. The good, the bad—and some days, the ugly. We're not going to sugarcoat it: this is a must tune-in episode with Dr. Alan Mead of The Very Dental Podcast. We're talking about ugly truths we really hope you care about.
Determining Ripeness in Wine Grapes
There is no more critical step in winemaking than picking at the often-fleeting correct moment. Yet ripeness determination is poorly understood and the associated picking logistics are often incompetently executed. If you think satisfying artistic winemaking should be easy, you’ll find making marshmallow crispy treats a more rewarding endeavor. If you’re prepared to roll up your sleeves in pursuit of greatness, continue reading. One thing for sure — Brix has nothing to do with ripeness.

Check out all of our U.S. Nationals previews here With this summer’s USA Nationals serving as the selection meet for both Pan Pacs and next year’s World Championships, we’re going to look at the men’s 200 free with an eye toward 2019. While team USA surged to an easy victory in the 4×200 free relay in Rio, things weren’t so pretty at the 2015 or 2017 World Champs. Lacking Phelps in 2015 and Phelps and Lochte in 2017, the USA could only manage minor medals at those meets.
33 Meters: Zane Grothe’s Turnaround Story
Most professional swimmers are living between two worlds: the swimming world and the “real” world. As any competitive swimmer knows, life in and out of the pool is a juggling act, one that gets even harder when you are no longer a student-athlete and have to pay your own bills. This is the turnaround story of Zane Grothe: U.S. National Champion, Team USA member, and Fike Swim ambassador. It’s hard to imagine now, but that was American Record Holder Zane Grothe in March 2015.

2018 U.S. Nationals Preview: Zane Train Still Rolling In The 800 Free
In June of 2017 the IOC announced the addition of the men’s 800 freestyle, women’s 1500 freestyle, and mixed 400 medley relay to the swimming program for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. While this news was largely received by swimming fans with cheers (Katie Ledecky in the 1500, of course) and jeers (skepticism of mixed relays), it was received by Olympic hopefuls with open arms as it provides additional opportunities to qualify.

Back in the water now, he told SwimSwam he’ll still skip the Mesa Pro Swim Series stop but plans on returning at the first racing opportunity after Mesa. Smith’s surgery was a catheter ablation, which is when thin wires (catheters) are inserted in the neck or groin and then threaded through a vein into the heart.
2018 M. NCAAs: After None In 2017, Five Top-2 Seeds Missed The A-Final
Perhaps nowhere in swimming do seed times mean less than at the NCAA Championships. If a team tapers more for the conference championships, they may come in with some of the top seed times, but will they be able to pull off the double taper successfully? On the other hand, a team like Texas who doesn’t really rest at all prior to NCAAs may come in with times that don’t reflect their ability at all.
"It's going to be a crazy race" (Video)
Texas’s Townley Haas led the entire way, but things started to look bleak with about 150 to go. The field started to charge on Haas – first Michigan’s Felix Auboeck, then NC State’s Anton Ipsen, then Stanford’s Grant Shoults. But Haas suddenly surged home in 23.94 to hang on for the win, his second NCAA 500 free title in three years. Auboeck finished second in 4:09.03, closing hard and holding off NC State’s Ipsen, who was 23.8 over the final 50 yards.

It looked like Michigan’s Auboeck had him on the final 50, but Haas fought back on the last 25 to take the win with a lifetime best 4:08.60, clipping his former best and keeping the title with Texas.
2018 M. NCAA Picks: Auboeck, Haas To Go Head-To-Head In 500 Free

That marks a pretty significant .33 second drop in the SCY 50 free this season. Furthermore, that marks Andrew as the 3rd 18-and-under to go a sub-19 50 free.
Divers, Stars Lead Hoosiers To Repeat Title
The 2018 Men’s B1G Ten Championships wrapped up on Saturday night, and it was the Indiana Hoosiers emerging with their second consecutive title. The Hoosiers repeat as champions for the first time in 33 years, as they won three straight from 1983-85.
Felix Auboeck Goes Sub-4:10 in 500 Free for 3rd Time in His Career
The list of athletes who have swum sub-4:10 in the 500 yard freestyle is growing. The club is still exclusive – 12 guys have done it, but it is a less-exclusive barrier than, say the number of swimmers who have gone sub-41 in the 100 free (only 4), or women who have gone sub-4:30 in the 500 free (just 2). The list of swimmers who have gone sub-4:10 twice is much smaller (4), and the list of guys who have done it thrice is even smaller.
Can Schooling Answer Dressel?
While a small conference, the Big 12 men’s championship is always an exciting look into what the Texas Longhorns will do at the NCAAs. That may be more important than ever this year, as Texas will have stiffer competition in the team standings at the NCAA this time around. The Longhorns lost some key players, with Jack Conger, Clark Smith, and Will Licon being their biggest losses.
