Have you ever used a typewriter?
Got an electric one in high school as a Christmas present. I didn't know it at the time, but it changed my life forever.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To report the truth as you best see it through being more informed than your average reader. Even when it doesn't fit your narrative.
What's your favorite social network?
I hate that it's Twitter, but it's still Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
All members of the Tampa Bay Lightning dynasty. We need more positivity on social media, and I am not rational about my love for them.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My work on USF Athletics basically lying to stakeholders. But all the guilty folks got golden parachutes instead of pink slips unfortunately.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don’t work for free. Even as an intern, if a company isn’t willing to pay you something for your labor, they’re not taking you seriously. Also get as much experience in press boxes covering games as you can. High school can be ok if you’re being paid to string by a local outlet, but I’d lean into as much Division I and pro as possible. It’s a skill everyone should have, even if you cover games from a mostly gambling perspective as I do.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Monday morning when I'm planning on being in pitch-acceptance mode.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That Vegas knows who's going to win. They have more information than the causal bettor, but if you dig enough you absolutely will beat them.
